So, it seems I reinvent this about every 6 months or so when I realize that the older system isn't working for our family. Here's my next attempt.

My last one (The weekly instead of monthly view had us writing in activities daily, ie. lesson numbers, etc. I have goals that I've made for the year in math, and our co-ops have weekly assignments already laid out. I figured if they just mark that they worked on it, it would suffice the "daily record" requirement for homeschooling. I will just attach the lesson outlines for our co-ops and math at the end of the Mead folder when it comes time to do portfolio reviews.)

I also wrote up a task sheet for the week that I put up on the wall.

Quarter 3 focus: Chemistry & Artists

* My husband has agreed to do the Chemistry Experiment from 9 to 9:30 a.m.

We will have our devotional and Public Speaking after the experiment.

There are 15 units in this curriculum covering American history from the first immigrants through the end of the Civil War. We will be completing one unit every other week. Classical Conversations 2011-12 — Co–op

It's official! The new Classical Conversations Co-op in South Florida has been created! We are excited to get this group organized in a fun, friendly and free format. We hope that as we all work together this year, we will recognize all of the hours put in by each of us to make our group really valuable. We are donating our time and talents for the benefit of each other, and especially our children.

We are using a homeschool approach, where families take turns teaching each other. We meet in our home with two to three other families, and meet together as a larger group once a quarter, once a semester for Parent's night, and for occasional field trips.

As this is a Christian Co-op, individual views in faith sometimes arise. It is our desire to have an atmosphere where all are welcome, and invited to live their faith. This is not church. It is school. We study math, history, latin, grammar, science, and timeline information. We have science experiments and art/music projects. We give oral reports. We also work on memorizing scriptures from the Bible. (** See below.)

It is my goal that we will all love coming to class, enjoy learning, and look forward to companionship with friends and fellow homeschooling families. The Lord has guided us in so many ways, and I know He is pleased when we come together through our academic pursuits.

Faith Statement

This group is comprised of Christians. People who love the Savior Jesus Christ, and want to raise their children in an environment where their testimony of Him can grow as they learn and study the world around them. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints have a desire to follow their own version of the Classical Conversations Faith statement, our group has been formed. It is not limited to members of this church. To clear up any questions regarding the Faith Statement, it is listed below, along with our own Faith Statement.

With the spirit of love and charity, this group can be a great source of community and friendship. We can teach our children in an environment that seeks for “anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy” (Thirteenth Article of Faith).

Essentials of our Faith —FYI
From the Classical Conversations Website, Faith Statement

All Scripture is self-attesting and being Truth, requires our unreserved submission in all areas of life. The (1)... Word of God, the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, is a complete and unified witness to God's redemptive acts culminating in the incarnation of the Living Word, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible,(2) ... fully inspired by the Holy Spirit, is the word of God, * (3) and the (4)[Living God is the] supreme and final authority on all matters on which it speaks.

On this sure foundation, we affirm these additional Essentials of our faith:
1. We believe in one God, the sovereign Creator and Sustainer of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. To Him be all honor, glory and praise forever!

2. Jesus Christ, the living Word, become flesh through His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit and His virgin birth. He who is true God became true man united in one Person forever. He died on the cross a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. On the third day He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Mediator.

3. The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Godhead, has come to glorify Christ and to apply the saving work of Christ to our hearts. He convicts us of sin and draws us to the Savior. Indwelling our hearts, He gives new life to us, empowers and imparts gifts to us for service. He instructs and guides us into all truth, and seals us for the day of redemption.

4. Being estranged from God and condemned by our sinfulness, our salvation is wholly dependent upon the work of God's grace. God credits His righteousness to those who put their faith in Christ alone for their salvation, thereby justifies them in His sight. We believe that (a) salvation is by grace, a free gift of God apart from works, (b) salvation involves repentance, a change of mind in respect to God and thus turning from one's own way to God's way, (c) salvation is through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ in Christ alone, (d) all who receive Jesus Christ are regenerated by the Holy Spirit and become the children of God, and (e) true salvation will be manifested by a changed life.

(5) 6. Jesus Christ will come again to the earth—personally, visibly, and bodily—to judge the living and the dead, and to consummate history and the eternal plan of God. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” (Rev. 22:20)

7. The Lord Jesus Christ commands all believers to proclaim the Gospel throughout the world and to make disciples of all nations. Obedience to the Great Commission requires total commitment to “Him who loved us and gave Himself for us.” He calls us to a life of self-denying love and service. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
(Eph 2:10)

For the Qtr Scripture Mastery scriptures, the goal is to become familiar with them. One family member will read the scripture aloud, and then invite everyone to read it with them. Morning Devotional

We will start every class day by honoring the Lord through prayer and Scripture memory. We will also cover important announcements.

We will rotate the assignment of Prayer, Scripture Mastery, Devotional and Pledge to a different family each week. The parent will decide which family member leads each task.

Student Presentations

Every other week, each student will have the opportunity to develop the important skills of speaking and listening by giving a 2–3 minute presentation during class time. The younger students can use this as show-and-tell time and may even need their mother's assistance in a question/answer format. Eventually, every child will be eager to speak so teachers will begin working with them to improve their presentation skills including eye contact, posture, pace, and volume.

The teachers have a rotating list of suggested topics for the older students to help them narrow their focus for each of the six weeks in every quarter. Another idea is to use this time to present papers the students have written for Essentials for other homeschooling classes.

It would be nice to go on two field trips as a group during the year. Possibly during the week that we have a break, or over the Christmas holiday. Some ideas are attending a Symphony, or art museum that have to do with topics we are covering in class.

We have the opportunity to help the community in making 200 Christmas Stockings and 200 Handmade Christmas Cards for the Forgotten Soldiers Organization. They will be stuffing Christmas Cards inside them.

We encourage you to do them at home, with your children, or with fellow

sisters and neighbors to spread the joy of serving others. :)

The stockings are going to be 9 3/4 " tall by 5 1/2" wide at top and 8 1/4 " wide on the foot, give or take some. These dimensions are the size before sewing them.

Please make cards so they can fit inside stockings.

For those who find the King James Version difficult to understand...

Remember, we're learning the language of the scriptures. Just like a foreign language, getting use to biblical speaking is an important skill to acquire. We will be learning John 1 in Latin this year. There is power in knowledge. It is worth the effort to know how to translate the scriptures ourselves. Greek, Hebrew, and Latin were it's first languages. Thee's and Thou's are a foreign language today that can be learned with practice.

Craft Fair Fundraiser- Earns $1000!

We hosted a Craft Fundraiser for a friend of ours, and we earned exactly $1000! Our goal!
It was definitely a miracle, and we were so blessed to witness it!

Here is the flyer that we made to announce the event. We sold many items for $5, and some for more and some for less. The best price that went were for the $3 to $5 range items. We did it a few weeks before Valentines Day. We also sold homemade bread loaves for $5, and bags of cookies and brownies for $5. About 10 women worked diligently to pull this off.

Classical Conversations Essentials of the English Language- AT HOME!

So, the Essentials of the English Language through Classical Conversations is a great program. It is best if you can be part of a group. However, if you can't, you can still do it at home, and make your own group, or do it alone. I've found that when you involve a couple more families, you stay more responsible to your goals, and you are more creative on how to inspire your students. You don't need to know everything about grammar to teach grammar. Be real, and let the kids know that you're learning with them. Get a couple good grammar books as reference, and focus on a topic each week. By the end of 24 weeks, you'll have memorized a lot of really great charts, and useful information. Find a set of punctuation rules that you love... and memorize those too.

Make sure you let the other mom's know that they are responsible for really teaching grammar at home with their kids too. When you meet together, you are reinforcing your decision to learn grammar, introduce a topic, and diagram a sentence or two. Is it exactly what they do in the Essential's paid class? I don't know... I've never been... but we've learned some great things doing it this way. Especially me. Before I thought I wasn't qualified to teach this subject. Now, my 3rd year of teaching grammar myself, I have confidence, and my kids will forever benefit from my wealth of knowledge of the English language. I still don't know everything, but I've realized that the answer sheets in the back of the book are there for a reason. :)

I've listed the items below that we have used to make a successful Co-op. By watching the DVD's, it has really helped us know how to teach the mastery sheets. The key is memorizing the information. The Classical method of learning.

So, I made these posters from the back of my scriptures. They're very useful, and very cheap to make. The images are high quality, and you can make a tabloid size print very easily. Tabloid size is 11x17. I laminated mine too, and for less than $10 I had a great teaching tool for the Ancient Times, as well as all Old and New Testament Studies.

Sized to print out on 8.5" x 11" card stock, they're bigger than his examples but smaller than the classroom-sized ones commercially available... perfect for your kitchen or reading nook!.

We are following also the Classical Conversations Essentials for the English Language also,

and that is why it is listed as 24 weeks for classes. The grammar rules & punctuation rules coordinate with that program, but you could easily make up your own list of rules you would like memorized, and add a sticker when completed.

This poster I found helpful. Especially for younger students who are struggling. They don't need to complete everything. Have them focus on grade level items listed. 8 1/2 x 11.

The Homeschool Planner

Every year it seems I re-invent the Weekly Planner for our Homeschooling adventure. This year's invention is going to be for each child to keep track of their own schedule, by marking off what they did each day. They circle the day of the week at the top, and then put a check mark by the things they've done. For our Portfolio Review, we need to show what we've done each day in each subject, so this is how we are going to accomplish it this year.

We follow the Accountable Kids program... (see other post). The Morning, and Evening Routines come from this. We reward the kids after 10 days of getting everything done with a Special Date with a parent.

The second page is the title page.

Place in a Mead, 3 Prong folder. It's designed to fit perfectly inside one of these.

Also, it can be taken easily with you if needed.

Books I Recommend Frequently

These books are typically viewed as homeschool books, but I recommend them to everyone. My job as a mother is to educate my child. Whether or not they go to school somewhere else, it is still my responsibility to make sure they get a good education. A lot of these books have inspired me to use time while driving, or while preparing meals to educate myself, and my children.

The importance of reading classics, and of viewing life as school, rather than a set period of time in a building.

This one I think is the "Bible" of Homeschooling, well, at least it was to me when I was first starting. It was daunting to get through at first. I felt like I would never measure up, but now 6 years later, I see that her suggestions have stayed with me, and I pick more and more of them as time goes on to implement into my routine.

We use our car to homeschool, as well audio books for quiet time during the afternoon. Especially with a non-reader in our home still, these are full of interesting information. Good for any age, and targeted for children.

Made me think more about what kinds of music I expose my children to on a regular basis. We have Suzuki piano & flute CD's, Beginning piano classics like Beethoven and Bach on CD, and concerts of Andre Rieu, as well as the 3 Tenors that we watch frequently. My sister in law loves the Yanni concerts. She's the one who inspired me to open the door to the classics during "down time". Also, the kids can see people performing in an orchestra, and loving it. Makes it more attainable as a goal to be good at it one day.

For Pre-schoolers. Has great suggestions of classic children's books to read, and mini-lessons that are fun to do together. These are the books that my little ones love, because they remember us doing things together with them.

Poetry Memorization Audio CD and Book from IEW (The Institute for Excellence in Writing).

These poems are great. They are classic ones, that you wished you had available on CD. The more you listen to them, the better your language skills increase. Reciting a poem has become easy when we listen to them daily. I pick a couple and play them until we get them.

This last one is not a book...

it's a favorite talk from church on being a woman.

I love it so much. I've referred to it many times, so I find it appropriate to list it here.

Accountable Kids Program Variation

We've been using the Accountable Kids program for about 3 years now. After the first year of turning cards for everything, we adjusted the cards to look something like this.

I put all morning, afternoon, and evening items on a single card. I laminated it with packing tape for durability. I added post-it tabs that can be changed easily to specify what the individual goal is for that specific area.

Also Bonus Bucks... my little ones always seemed to knock them down, or change them, and they would be wrong more than right. I laminated the top part of this card, and the bottom is able to be written on with pencil. A tally mark is a bonus buck. Each child earns a different amount for a bonus buck, depending on age... so I wrote what they make and when they were promoted on the card also.

I still love this program. Actually, I love the Special Dates with my kids. It motivates them, and it motivates me to look for the good they do. We also got rid of earning tickets for everything... however, they know that they can't watch tv, or go play with friends, etc. without having their morning or afternoon stuff done, and cleaning up. So, technically, we still are doing it. I'm just not handing them a ticket. I have 5 kids 10 and under, and that was way too much work to stay on top of. This way, we check at the end of the day. If they did it, they earn a sticker, and the rest is history!

Just wanted to share my variation... because, it would have been helpful to me to see this working in other families when we started off.

My Daily ipod playlist

My Daily ipod playlist inspired by "Nurtured by Love" by Dr. Suzuki

As I read this book, I decided to put my ipod to work. I thought of the things that I most wanted my children and myself to be exposed to on a regular basis. I made a playlist called "Daily Morning", and then I pushed play each morning. When my children have learned the songs on the "Daily Morning" list, I update them with different songs. We have songs, poems, scripture mastery verses, Italian, Spanish, and even Latin that play in the background each morning as we get ready for the day. What we are exposed to on a daily basis make up who we are.

MY BASICS:

I pick a couple mp3 files from each. I add new ones when we're ready, or have memorized them.

7. Classical Conversations Cycle 1, 2, and 3 Audio CD's.

We also listen to the weekly History, Science, Math, Grammar, and Latin songs/recitations once a day, either while we are driving around town, or as we are getting ready for lunch. They are very useful, and I have found they make a great "learning spine" on which you can plug in everything else you are learning. We focus on one CD a year, then rotate through. I love their website online tutorials. They are expensive, but you can download all you want, and it goes right along with what you're learning from the CD's. You can sign up for a month or two, and then quit when you're done. I put all the info that I download into plastic sleeves and into a binder. I also printout the tutorials and laminate them, (kindof like the Veritas Press Cards), and we display the new one for each week on the wall at home.

Summary of Nurtured by Love

by Julia Bentley

In the book Nurtured by Love Dr Shininchi Suzuki uses his biography as an

outline for a series of examples to confirm his theory that ability is not

inherited but is taught in the same way that each child learns how to speak. He

believed that people are what they are as a result of their specific

environment, and that a baby is not born musical but can become so through

suitable environmental conditions. Throughout the book Suzuki provides

convincing evidence that, with the right nurturing, any child can develop into a

talented and exceptional human being. He firmly believed that talent is no

accident of birth and that we are all born with the natural ability to learn.

As children are mainly educated in the home, parental involvement is very important.

The purpose of ‘talent education’ is to train children, not to become

professional musicians but to be fine musicians and to show high ability in any

other field they enter. Suzuki concludes his book by declaring that we are all

born with high potential, and if we try hard, any of us can become superior

human beings and acquire talent and ability.

Homeschool Fieldtrip

Took a couple of the kids on a 4H fieldtrip out to the Fairgrounds to a place called Yesteryear Village. Look at how many came! My kids had a blast. I had a blast too, as I arranged something else for the little ones to do so I could take care of the baby too. It's amazing how going on these kinds of things are great with all the kids, when my hubbie is there too. When it's just me, it tends to be a little frazzling keeping track of the 2 year old. Okay, I feel guilty... but not guilty enough to not try it again. I like to pick my battles. :)

Here's me with Little Miss L. in an old schoolhouse at the village. She's 4 1/2 months old now! She just advanced to the saucer, she can now roll over, and somehow looks huge in our tiny crib that we bought for her to save space at home. Oh, and let's not forget that she can now say "Mamma". What a sweetie!

Motherhood Is An Education

I recently heard a talk that gave me cause for reflection on the role of Motherhood.

I am consistently amazed when I pause to think about all that I have learned in just eight years of being a mother. It is an inspiring calling that requires endless diligence, energy, enthusiasm, compassion, organization, humility, and patience. Did I mention patience?

"Motherhood is the ideal opportunity for life long learning. Mother and child learn and grow together at a remarkable pace. It is exponential, not linear."

Here is the beginning of an endless list of what you learn:

I have always been grateful for what I learned in college. It gives me peace of mind that I would be prepared to go out into the work field should our family circumstances require it. It also allows me to serve others in ways that not everyone can, through Graphic Design and Art. I am also more confident to home school my children because of it. However, I have come to realize that I have done far more learning in my role as a mother than I ever did in a University.

Motherhood is noble if we treat it as such. It can be as little or as much as we make it to be. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY (soon) to my Mom. She set the example of what a "stay at home mom" can be. It took sacrifice, determination, and a lot of prayer. Thanks Mom.

Tea Party South Florida

We went to two Tea Parties Yesterday. The Boca Party was very low key. We were quite popular with people taking our picture, as I brought all my kids.

The Fort Lauderdale Party was much better. We had a sleeping toddler, so we decided to drive up and down the block with a huge American Flag out our window, and this poster that said:

"Honk If I'm Paying Your Mortgage!"

It was amazing how popular our car was. As soon as our sign was read, the crowd burst into applause and cheers.

It was a good lesson for my kids to be a part of. Freedom of Speech. Now, lets see if the men on the hill listen.

Horseback riding lessons?

Okay, so about a year ago I was at the Dentist, and after hearing about all of his ski trips that he likes to go on to Utah, just for the weekend, I saw a picture of his daughter during a horseback riding lesson, and I thought... oh man, what luxury are my fillings going to buy his family this time?

Skip ahead a year now, to Christmas, and my daughter, age 8, decides that the only thing she really wants is a few horseback riding lessons. Easy enough. Nothing to clutter the house, and she'll learn something. A little pricey, but we'll see how it goes.

We've now been to 3 lessons, and all I can say is that I love them. I feel like we're getting so much more than just lessons out of the whole experience. She's learning to groom and take care of the horse, learn good posture while riding, is not being so timid around animals, and her teacher is very encouraging and helps her know that it takes lots of practice to get good at something. We're also getting a one on one experience with a beautiful horse.

My boys absolutely love running around in the dirt, (which is so foreign to our techno based home life). They have a pig, cats, and a dog that all run around loose. It's like visiting a farm, that is more than happy to explain all the little things that go on there. I feel like we've received a class just for my boys for free from all the things they're learning from it. Today we watched the horses get their shoes replaced, and get haircuts. Totally cool and educational to watch. They gave them the worn out shoes to take home, and some of the trimmings that we wanted to look at under a microscope to see what they're all about. It was such an intimate setting also, which made the learning even more fun.

Also, my kids are so motivated to go. They bring homework in the car, and are willing to do extra stuff around the help, because of the high of being around horses. I LOVE IT!

Would I say it is worth it? Absolutely. The price up front is a choker... but you get so much more out of it than just lessons. I think it is something worth sacrificing for. We'll see how long the "horseback high" lasts... hopefully long enough to build self confidence, and create a child who's willing to take on hard things and finish them.

So, pretty much, I'm re-thinking all of those judgmental thoughts that I had about my dentist's daughter. I think I just needed to walk in their shoes a bit to see that it is really a worth while adventure.

A Christmas Eve poem

A Christmas Eve Poem... to keep your kids in bed!

Two little boys lay wide awake,

once on a Christmas Eve.

Though their mother has tucked them safe in bed,

and kissed and covered each curly head.

They only played make believe.

We'll lie awake and watch for Santa Claus,

and we won't make any noise.

And we'll hear him drop from the chimney top,

said those naughty little boys.

Soon the house grew lonely, dark, and deep,

and the fire died in the grate.

The clock on the mantel said,

"Tick-tock, Tick-tock, I know, I know."

The chair in the corner looked like a ghost

with clothes all over it spread.

They wanted to scream but they couldn't speak,

for they heard the stairs go creakity, creak,

like the goblins going to bed.

Soon down the chimney came Santa Claus,

fresh from his snowy sled,

but they thought him a ghost from the goblin crowd

and all together they screamed so loud

that they frightened him away.

And they never got anything for Christmas!

I had to post this Christmas Poem. My mom has it memorized, and would say it every Christmas Eve to us kids to scare us into not coming out of our rooms on Christmas Eve. I thought it was time to write some of these traditions down. Somehow I feel like one of the Grimms brothers, trying to capture all of the songs and poems that my family has cooped up in their heads for generations. Hope you enjoy it!

I just found out about Vinyl Lettering for your walls from a friend of mine, and so I designed my own words to go above Sydney's bed.
